As energy systems become more complex, utilities and energy providers face growing operational pressure. From managing complex tariffs and prosumer offers to navigating evolving regulations and handling billing at scale, operators need faster, smarter ways to work.

Wattson, exnaton’s AI Backoffice assistant, is designed to meet this need. Built directly into the exnaton Backoffice, Wattson helps users access information, complete tasks, and navigate complex workflows more efficiently using natural language.

! Wattson is currently available as a BETA release and is being actively tested and improved together with selected customers. New features, capabilities, and knowledge sources are continuously being added based on real-world usage and feedback. Existing exnaton customers who would like to participate in the beta program and help shape the future of AI-powered utility operations are invited to contact our team.

What is Wattson?

Wattson is an AI-powered solution that supports daily operations within the exnaton Backoffice. Instead of manually searching through documentation, navigating multiple interfaces, or relying on internal support, users can simply ask questions and receive contextual, relevant answers instantly.

The assistant is designed specifically for energy providers and their operational workflows, combining product knowledge, regulatory expertise, and real-time platform data into a single interface.

Unlike general-purpose AI tools, Wattson is purpose-built for utility operations. It understands the context of energy products, billing processes, regulatory frameworks, and customer account management, enabling users to access relevant information directly within their daily workflows.

What can Wattson help with?

Wattson acts as a central intelligence layer across the exnaton Backoffice, supporting users in multiple operational areas and navigate complex tasks.

Account Management and Billing operations

Wattson simplifies account-related workflows by providing quick access to relevant data and insights. Users can retrieve account details, review ownership structures, and check meter data by asking in natural language, without navigating multiple system layers or having to run complex database queries.

Billing is one of the most complex and critical parts of energy operations. Wattson supports users in reviewing and managing bills, processing charges, and handling billing-related inquiries.

It also helps with invoicing and payment-related questions, making it easier for teams to respond to support inquiries from their end-customers. By streamlining these processes, Wattson reduces operational overhead and the need for technical skills in the operating workforce.

General support and product guidance

Wattson helps users understand how to use the platform more effectively. It answers “how-to” questions, explains features, and guides users through workflows step by step. Instead of relying on static documentation, users receive contextual explanations tailored to their specific task.

In addition, Wattson draws from exnaton’s knowledge base to provide instant answers to frequently asked questions, reducing dependency on support teams and accelerating onboarding for new users.

Regulatory knowledge and industry insights

Energy markets are highly regulated and vary significantly across countries. Wattson helps bridge this complexity by providing explanations of relevant legislation and industry concepts.

Whether users need clarity on regulatory frameworks or want to better understand concepts like dynamic tariffs or energy sharing models, Wattson delivers structured, easy-to-understand answers. This makes it easier for teams to stay compliant while building and operating innovative energy products.

How Wattson works

Wattson is designed to be intuitive and easy to use. Users simply ask questions in natural language – directly within the exnaton Backoffice – and receive immediate, relevant responses. The assistant operates in the same language as the platform interface, ensuring a seamless user experience.

Behind the scenes, Wattson is powered by selected large language models via Amazon Bedrock hosted securely on Amazon Web Services infrastructure in Frankfurt, Germany. This setup ensures high standards of data security and compliance, fully aligned with exnaton’s existing data processing agreements.

To deliver accurate and reliable answers, Wattson combines multiple data sources. It leverages exnaton’s support knowledge base and custom skills, a curated repository of regulatory and industry knowledge, and relevant account data from the exnaton Backoffice.

Importantly, Wattson operates within clearly defined guardrails. It is designed to answer only product-related and relevant operational questions in the professional context, while filtering out harmful or unrelated content. This ensures both safety and reliability in professional use.

Why agentic work matters for energy providers

The energy transition is driving a shift toward more dynamic, decentralized, and data-driven energy systems, and in parallel we have a transition towards autonomous enterprises ongoing across industries.

AI solutions help utilities manage complexity by making knowledge instantly accessible and workflows more efficient. It reduces the time spent searching for information, lowers the barrier to using advanced platform features, and empowers teams to focus on higher-value tasks.

By embedding AI directly into operational workflows, Wattson transforms the backoffice from a manual, fragmented environment into a more intelligent and responsive system.

Wattson in BETA: Continuous improvement

Wattson is currently available as a BETA release and is being continuously improved together with early users. As adoption grows, new capabilities, refinements, and expanded knowledge coverage will be introduced to support an even broader range of utility workflows.

User feedback plays a central role in the development process. If Wattson cannot answer a question or deliver the information you are looking for, users are encouraged to provide feedback so that the assistant can continue to improve.
