As energy products become increasingly dynamic and data-driven, billing operations are becoming more complex as well. Utilities and energy providers need more than just invoice generation – they need transparency, operational flexibility, and scalable billing workflows that can handle growing portfolios and evolving energy data requirements.
That’s why we’re introducing Bill Runs – a new feature in exnaton designed to make billing faster, more structured, and more transparent directly within the exnaton Backoffice.
Bill Runs build upon the existing billing functionality in exnaton and introduce a more advanced framework for configuring, executing, monitoring, and managing billing processes at scale.
A Bill Run is a batch billing operation that generates bills at once – whether for a few selected accounts, customer groups, a whole energy community, or all valid accounts within the system for a specific billing period.
Each Bill Run tracks:
This gives utilities significantly more visibility and operational control over the billing process.

With Bill Runs, users can now create billing runs for:
The new workflow also allows users to define how billing errors should be handled.
Utilities can choose between:
This flexibility helps teams adapt billing processes to different operational requirements and risk preferences.
One of the biggest improvements introduced with Bill Runs is visibility into billing execution.
Each Bill Run provides detailed monitoring and execution tracking directly in the Backoffice, including:
Users can immediately see:
The system also supports targeted follow-up runs, allowing teams to rerun billing only for failed accounts instead of repeating the entire process.
Because billing quality depends heavily on underlying energy data quality, Bill Runs also introduce configurable minimum data quality thresholds.
Users can define the minimum required quality level for each billing run individually, including:
Billing attempts that do not meet the selected threshold automatically fail, ensuring higher consistency and reliability in invoice generation.
Additionally, users can proactively validate energy data quality before execution using the built-in “Check Data Quality” functionality.
Bill Runs also make it easier to manage updated or corrected energy data.
With the new “Create and Correct” billing mode, exnaton can automatically generate correction bills when invoices already exist for a selected period but updated data has become available.
This enables utilities to handle evolving metering and settlement data more efficiently without manual intervention.
Bill Runs were designed to support growing operational complexity as utilities expand dynamic tariffs, energy communities, and other next-generation energy products.
The feature introduces:
The new list and detailed views in the Backoffice also make it easier for teams to search, filter, sort, and analyze billing processes across large portfolios.
